# Convert Currency Without Leaving Gmail

> Quotes, invoices and prices arrive by email – and Gmail has no conversion anything. The tab-switching workflow everyone runs, and the sidebar that replaces it.

## Money arrives in the inbox first

The supplier's quote in euros. The contractor's invoice in dollars. The venue's price list in yen. Foreign-currency numbers reach you by email before they reach any spreadsheet – and the very first question ("what is that in our currency, roughly?") gets asked right there, in Gmail, where there is nothing to answer it.

## What people actually do, step by step

Copy the amount. Open a new tab. Type the conversion into a search engine. Read the number. Switch back. Forget it by the third line item, repeat. Or, for the diligent: open Sheets, write `=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:EURUSD")`, multiply – a real answer, in a different app, for a question that lives in this one. Neither is a scandal; both are friction on a task you do more often than you think, and the friction has a quiet cost: the check gets skipped, and a mis-remembered rate rides into a reply.

## Why Gmail specifically has no native answer

Sheets at least has GOOGLEFINANCE. Gmail – like Docs, Slides and Calendar – has no formula engine at all, so there is nothing to type a conversion into and no add-in surface Google fills itself. The inbox is the one place in Workspace where currency questions are most frequent and least answerable natively. [When a formula is enough](/blog/googlefinance-vs-currency-addon) draws the line between the two.

## The sidebar answer

[Currency Converter](/google-workspace/currency-converter) puts conversion in a Workspace sidebar that opens inside Gmail: read the amount in the message, convert it in the sidebar – live rates for 180+ currencies, no tab, no copy-paste. And because it is one add-on across Gmail, Docs, Calendar, Slides *and* Sheets, the same tool follows the number from the email where it arrived to the quote where it ends up. Sidebar conversions are unlimited and free, no sign-up.

Two moments where it earns its place: sanity-checking a price before you reply "that works for us" to a number you converted in your head, and getting a rough figure for a quote in the minute before you forward it. For the rate on an invoice's *own* date rather than today's, the add-on's historical lookup lives in its Sheets formula (a Premium feature) – see [historical exchange rates in Google Sheets](/blog/historical-exchange-rates-google-sheets).
