Scheduling Meetings Between the US and Australia
The US and Australia are nearly antipodal — there is no business-hours overlap. Here's how teams on both sides make it work without exhausting everyone.
Scheduling Tips
New York (EST) and Sydney (AEST) are 15 hours apart in winter — 8 am ET = 11 pm AEST.
The only workable slot: very early morning for the US (7–8 am ET = 10–11 pm Sydney) or very late for Australia.
San Francisco and Sydney are 18–19 hours apart — even harder. A "morning" call in SF is in the middle of the night in Sydney.
Australia's DST (October–April) shifts the gap by 1 hour — the actual difference varies between 14 and 16 hours depending on the time of year.
For recurring meetings, alternate the "pain" time each week so no team always sacrifices personal hours.
Async-first is strongly recommended: shared documents, recorded video updates, and overlap-free sprints.
