Turn Gmail Shortcuts ON - Then Let Your Screen Teach You

8apps Team·

Learn how to turn on Gmail keyboard shortcuts in seconds, view the built-in list, and let on-screen hints teach you the keys as you work.

Most Gmail users have heard of shortcuts, but almost no one uses them.

Not because they're hard — but because they're off by default.

Once you turn them on, Gmail becomes dramatically faster. And with a little help from on-screen hints, you don't even need to memorize anything.

Here's the quickest way to enable shortcuts and start using them the easy way.

Step 1: Turn Gmail Shortcuts ON

This takes less than 10 seconds.

How to enable (3 steps):

  1. Open Gmail
  2. Click the gear icon → See all settings
  3. Scroll to Keyboard shortcuts → select ON

That's it.

Your inbox now supports one-key actions like:

  • C to compose
  • E to archive
  • R to reply
  • / to search
  • Z to undo

You'll use these dozens of times a day.

Step 2: Press "?" to See Gmail's Built-In List

Gmail has a native keyboard help overlay — you just need to know the trigger.

Press: ? (Shift + /)

You'll see a full list of shortcuts organized by category.

Useful, but not the fastest way to learn.

Why?

Because you still need to memorize the keys before you can use them.

Which brings us to the smarter approach…

Step 3: Let Your Screen Teach You (Instead of Memorizing)

When you install Accelerator Keys, you learn shortcuts visually:

  1. Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac)
  2. Hints appear directly on top of Gmail's UI
  3. Each action shows its shortcut letter
  4. You press the key → Gmail performs it instantly

It's the difference between memorizing a cheat sheet…

…and having the instructions appear on-screen exactly when you need them.

If you want to learn shortcuts without thinking about it, add Accelerator Keys to Chrome and press Alt/Option to try it.

What Happens Once Shortcuts Are ON

Here's what improves immediately:

What changesHow
NavigationOne-key with J/K
Inbox cleanupInstant with E, #, B, -/+
SearchFrictionless with /
Thread movementFaster with O and U

Shortcuts are one of those features that feel niche — until you turn them on.

Then you wonder how you ever used Gmail without them.

From Eddie's desk…

Enabling Gmail shortcuts is the single fastest productivity boost inside your inbox. Turn them on once. Use them forever.

And if you want the simplest way to learn them (no memorization, no cheat sheets), press Alt / Option with Accelerator Keys installed and let the hints guide you.
